American Artist is the magazine that brings art masterpieces to the public at large. It is dedicated to those trying to improve their skills in sculpture or painting, including pastel, charcoal or watercolor. The magazine was first published in 1937 and has continuously provided easy-to-follow techniques and descriptions of the materials needed to create better artwork. Regular features, such as "The Watercolor Page" and "The Pastel Page" show readers the step by step work of contemporary painters. New techniques and materials are reviewed in each issue while their application is often shown in the "Technical Page" Q & A column. "Methods & Materials" explores difficult tasks such as transportation and painting on different surfaces and the commercial side of art is revealed through the "Business & Professional Practices" department which takes a look at galleries and juries around the world and at everything connected to art exhibits. The magazine also gives artists a chance to sell their works or to take part in various competitions. American Artist is published monthly by the Nielsen Company with a circulation of about 115,000.
