On a warm, sunny Monday in May 1875, 10,000 spectators poured into Churchill Downs, then called the Louisville Jockey Club, to watch the inaugural running of the Kentucky Derby. Fifteen horses took their places in two rows-12 in front and three behind-at the starting line drawn in the dirt, as a drum rattled in rhythmic cadence to signal the race was on. Fourteen of the riders were black.
