In These Times is a periodical appearing monthly with 12 issues per year. This is a political magazine focusing on news and opinions. Even though its founders – prominent left-wing intellectuals, modeled it after an early 20th century socialist newspaper as a mean to counteract corporate power, since the very beginning the editors strive to publish a politically progressive magazine with a broad variety of contributors not only from the left but anarchists, union members and political conservatives as well. In These Times is founded on the firm belief that any progressive political movement needs its own media in order to survive. The magazine targets the largest possible audience to include women, communities of color, working class people and other groups sometimes ignored by the conventional media. In These Times is known for its dedication to inform by providing in-depth analysis of current events and investigative reporting on corporate and government wrongdoings as well as a forum for debates and discussions, which makes it a stand-out among the mainstream media. It covers all the important issues of our time such as environmental issues, feminism, grassroots democracy, minority communities etc. The magazine is famous for the investigative reporting of significant events such as the Iran-Contra scandal, the Gulf War, global warming, Mad Cow disease, genocide in Sudan. In each issue you will find regular features like Frontline - recent news items, Features - includes the cover story and several other longer pieces, Views - opinion columns, and Culture sections - book, film, theater and music reviews. In These Times has published the work of a wide range of noted writers such as Alice Walker, Kurt Vonnegut, Clinton’s speech writer David Kusnet, Andrew Sullivan, Joan Walsh and many others. For its honest investigative reporting the magazine has won many prestigious awards, most recently the Utne Reader's Independent Press Award for Best Political Coverage in 2006. In These Times has a circulation of over 21,000 and as a non-profit organization the magazine is financed through subscriptions and donations. In These Times was established in 1976 by James Weinstein and is published by The Institute for Public Affairs.
